WALL OF WILL

Athlete stories turned into massive wallpapers to keep girls in sports

According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, girls are dropping out of sports at twice the rate of boys due to factors like body image, lack of confidence, peer pressure, and more.

Sports Illustrated’s insight was simple: girls aren’t lacking potential – they’re lacking proof. Proof that the challenges they face are normal. Proof that others have faced them too – and kept going.

Since young girls don’t see or hear enough about female athletes, Sports Illustrated decided to bring its coverage of female athletes directly to them. With a large library of editorial content about female athletes and their journeys, Sports Illustrated decided to turn real stories of sportswomen overcoming struggles into massive, vibrant wallpapers – the Wall of Will. By putting the Wall of Will up in school gyms and locker rooms, Sports Illustrated turned places that girls associate with doubts and insecurities into spaces that provide motivation and reassurance.
